About Ole Yellow Rescue

Ole Yellow Rescue is a NO-KILL animal shelter located in the beautiful Texas Hill County and the childhood home of Fred Gibson, author of Old Yeller and Savage Sam. We pride ourselves on giving animals in need the best care while they are in our hands.

Donations to Ole Yellow can be made by mail or directly at Mason Bank: MKM Bethel House Inc /dba Ole Yellow Rescue

We were formed in 2012 and are a 501(c)3 non-profit and it is a great tax deduction for a worthy cause. Helping one animal at a time can make a difference…with your help.

Our Animal Care Facilities

Frequently Asked Questions

When animals arrive at Ole Yellow they are seen by a veterinarian for a wellness check, given vaccines and spaded or neutered.  We take pride in giving our animals the best care and love while in our facility and try to find good homes for each animal.

We have no fee for adopting an animal.

We take in animals from primarily within Mason County (but outside city limits) or from other regional shelters whom we work with when they no longer have room.

We accept animals on the base on the type of animal and what space we have available.

  1. Community Service – We have been approved by Mason County for any individual needing to spend time doing community service.
  2. Volunteers – There is always cleaning and repairs that need to be done as well as scheduled feedings. And of course we’re always looking for helpers to play with the animals to help keep them socialized.

  3. Foster Parents – Most of our animals are housed in our kennel facilities, but anyone looking to foster a pet is always welcome to temporarily house them.
  4. Memorial Donations – If you’ve lost a family member who loved animals and would rather have contributions made in their name, rather than flowers, please contact us about the best way for friends and family to donate.

Unfortunately, due to insurance requirements, volunteer liability, and risk to other animals, we no not take extremely large animals or pit bulls.

  • Ole Yellow Rescue was formed in 2012 as a 501(c)3 non-profit.
  • Our first facility was located in a portable building behind the house which was the MKM Home Health Services office on Rainey Street on the southeastern corner of Mason.
  • In 2015, MKM was sold and a barn was setup with kennels on Peters Creek Road – just upriver from Fred Gibson’s home.
  • In 2024, we received a private donation that allowed us to insulate and put in central air and heat

We decided on Ole Yellow Rescue for a name because of Fred Gibson’s classic book and famous movie “Old Yeller”.

Our founder went to school with Gibson’s son. And the movie had its Texas premiere, with all main actors attending at the Odeon Theater in Mason, TX.

To this day, we have the rabies clinics because of the death of ole yeller. Years ago (1960s) there was a bad outbreak of rabies and a lot of cats had to be put down. Sherry, our founder was bitten by a cat with rabies and had to have injections for 21 days while she was in high school.
